Many businesses know that they ‘need’ marketing but in real terms, why do businesses need to market themselves?

Here at Bentley Marketing Consultancy we will of course say that a marketing plan should form the basis of any successful business, but why?

There are a few key reasons why a small business should never put marketing at the bottom of the ‘to do’ pile and actively make it a key part of your ongoing strategy.

Here are a few reasons why:

1) Marketing helps to grow your business – Simply put, to make more money or to increase the amount of money made from your existing customers, you need marketing. If people don’t know you exist then they’re not going to actively find you and if an existing customer does not know everything that you do, then they are unlikely to buy additional products or services from you.

2) Marketing helps people to find you – In today’s world, people have far more choice of where they buy their products or services. It is also far easier to find a supplier of a product or service. If your service does not stand out or you do not actively direct people to buy from you, then you are not going to be an option for them. You need to tell people you exist!

3) Marketing helps to differentiate you from competition – As with the previous point, there is so much choice for people now. Why should a potential customer choose you? Good marketing will help to differentiate you from your competitors and tell your potential customer why you should be their choice.

4) Marketing builds trust in your brand – As more and more potential customers recognise your brand and the quality of your product or service, your brand becomes synonymous with quality and therefore builds trust.

The common theme is that if a potential customer does not know that you exist then you are not going to attract new customers.

Many businesses actually do some marketing on a small scale often without realising it. Even if it’s just a logo on a van or a business card, it is making people aware of your business and your brand.

It’s difficult often to know where to go next with your marketing but one of the key steps is to understand your customer. How will they best find you as a supplier? What do they want from your product or service? Where will you find your customers? What is the best form of communication to them?

Once you understand this, you can then look at what you do currently – is it professional? Does it reflect you as a business? Will your customers respond to it? Marketing is a lot of self-reflection and asking yourself questions about what you want your business to be. If you don’t understand your market and your customers then you are likely to struggle to attract new ones.
